First Christian Reformed Church believes that our world belongs to God–the God who has made Himself known to us in the Bible. He created the world out of nothing, and is now restoring it from the damage that the first human rebellion caused so long ago (the original sin of Adam and Eve), and that ongoing human rebellion (personal sins) is still causing.
The most important instrument in God’s great project of restoration is none other than God’s own Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for human sin, and reverse sin’s damaging effects on God’s creation. To be rescued from sin’s penalty, a person must believe that Christ has taken your guilt, and that reconciliation with God is found in Christ alone.
FIRST – We were the first Christian Reformed Church in Hudsonville. We have ministered in the same location for over 100 years. Rooted in that rich heritage we expect to continue to grow into God’s purposes for us today.
The name CHRISTIAN means that we believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died for our sins. He is our Savior and our Lord. We show our love and commitment to Him in worship and in service.
REFORMED means we have roots in the historic part of the Christian church stemming from the Protestant Reformation in the 1500’s. We emphasize that the Bible, as God’s Word, is our only reliable source of authority. We also believe we are saved through God’s grace and not by our own efforts.
We call ourselves a CHURCH because as God’s people we need each other for friendship, support, and help with understanding the Bible and growing spiritually. We see ourselves as a part of God’s growing family.
Finally, while NORTH AMERICA is part of our official name, the “CRC” is a global denomination. We began nearly 200 years ago when Dutch immigrants came to North America. But today our nearly 1,000 churches and about 280,000 members in the United States and Canada include people from Hispanic, Asian, African and other ethnic origins. CRC agencies are also working to preach the Gospel and to relieve human suffering in more than 25 countries around the world.
Like the other churches in the Christian Reformed denomination, First CRC looks to six historical documents to articulate our thinking about God’s relationship to humanity and the rest of His creation. There are three creeds (theological statements intended for use in worship), and three confessions (theological statements intended for use as teaching tools).
Creeds: The Apostles’ Creed, The Nicene Creed, The Athanasian Creed
Confessions: The Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, The Canons of Dordt
